Kindergarten Update 10/4/19

Believe or not October has arrived! The children have settled into the classroom and Open House is right around the corner! We have also reached the point in the year where random days off/in-service days and early release days start to pop up. Scroll all the way to the end for a list of important dates!

A lot has happened this week. Here are some of the highlights:

Fundations: Letter introduced- s

Muscle Words: is & see

Today, I surprised the students with a fun way to practice writing their muscle words, letters and names after sign language class. .

Reader's Workshop: This week we read books that rhyme and played rhyming games. I think the favorite was reading The Hungry Thing and getting to feed the hungry monster! The children also started to collect more books in their reading bags in anticipation of bringing them home. Beginning next week, 2 nights each week, your child will bring home their reading bag. This is an opportunity for them to practice reading their books and to show you what they are learning.

Writer's Workshop: The children becoming writers! They have been working so hard at saying words slowly and listening for the beginning and ending sound. Once they identify the sound they hear, they find the picture on the letter board that begins with the same sound. We have talked a lot about the fact that they don't need to know the name of the letter to be a writer. Next week, we will move into telling stories across multiple pages.

Math: The students had a lot of fun this week creating and interpreting graphs. We started by learning about the format and important features of graphs. Next, we created graphs about boys and girls and how we get to school. The last few days, the students used a blank graph format to interview their classmates about things that like and collect the data.

We also spent time during math playing Go Fish. This simple game reinforces so many great math and social skills. I would encourage you to take time to play with your child at home this weekend.

Color Week: We had so much this week studying the colors. Each day they learned song about the color of the day. Each song incorporated the spelling of the color word and sign language. We were also very lucky to have Mrs. Horton come in on Monday and do an STEAM activity with our class.

On Wednesday, some of the 5th graders came down to help up do another special color day project. The children can't wait to show you at Open House in a few weeks!
