Muscle words of the week: up & down
Science: This week, the kindergarteners will be gathering again to continue our quest to figure out where water comes from and where it goes. Ask your child to tell you about the experiments that we have going here in kindergarten. Last week the children learned a song about the water cycle. The song helps reinforce their understanding of evaporation, condensation and precipitation.
Reading: The students should be regularly getting new books now in their reading bags each week not that the holidays are done and reading assessments are completed. Just a reminder that your child brings their reading bag home each Monday and Wednesday. Please encourage them to read a few of their books to you each night they bring their bag home.
Math: Our work with addition and subtraction fluency with facts to 5 will continue through this week. I thought I would let you know about some free math apps that we use to help reinforce math facts here at school.
Math Kid
Make 10+ Have fun while doing math! Kids will learn and improve math skills with simple, fun and engaging play. Your goal is to Make 10 as fast and often as you can by tapping the tile that adds up to 10 before the wall of tiles reaches the top.
MathTappers: Find Sums is a

Slowing Down...
This week the students and I are working on slowing down. Behavior has been a huge challenge the past few weeks, especially when the children have had guest teachers. Mrs. Ferguson did a wonderful guidance class on Friday about slowing down not just your body but your mind too. She talked a lot about how it's okay to be bored and just be. With children constantly being stimulated by activities, screens, etc these days, this is a skill that many children have not acquired. As a result we are taking more time to just be. Sometime this means sitting and look at books alone or with a friend, watching video of a fish aquarium, or just sitting and having a conversations about what we did over the weekend. After talking to Mrs. Ferguson, I also decided to get some more calming tools for the classroom this past weekend. Thanks to Amazon Prime, these arrived yesterday!
Today I put a few of these on the table during snack time so they can relax and watch these while they eat. |
Where is Mrs. McKnight...?
This is a very exciting week for me! It is the kick off week to the Big Change Roundup for Kids to benefit the UVM Children's Hospital. https://give.uvmhealth.org/campaign/big-change-roundup-for-kids-2020/c251094 Tomorrow I will be traveling around the district to different schools with representatives from the hospital as well as the WOKO radio station. The children will have a guest teacher. On Thursday and Friday morning I will also be out for the first hour or so of the day to travel to 2 other school for their kickoff event. Those two morning the children will have another adult from within our school with them.
Please remind your child to make good choices and be extra helpful when they have a guest teacher in the classroom.
Let me know if you have any questions.
