New muscle word: the
New letters introduced: i & j
Due to the short weeks, we did a week of review for the muscle words and letters during the past few weeks.
Math: Our focus the past few weeks has been shapes and patterns. We began with learning about shapes and what makes their attributes (edges, corners, etc). Then we used shapes to makes patterns. That evolved into the students identifying patterns that they see in the world around them. This week they were able to be pattern detectives and look for patterns around our classroom. They used the iPads to document the patterns and then we investigated them by displaying them on the SmartBoard.
Reader's Workshop: We have been busy working on mastering rhyming! We have read many rhyming books and played rhyming games. Rhyming is a phonemic awareness skill that is an important foundational skill. A good time to have your child practice rhyming is when you are in the car!
I also introduced another reading strategy called Eagle Eye. We have been reading books using shared reading and practicing using the our 2 known strategies, Eagle Eyes and Pointy Porcupine.
Eagle Eye
Look at the pictures for clues to help figure out the word.
Writing: We are continuing to work on the art of writing a 3 page book with a beginning middle and end. With each one the children do they are becoming more efficient at the process. Writing "words" is the most challenging part of the process. At this point in the year the hope is that students are writing the sound they hear at the beginning and end of a word. They are also expected to use the word wall to accurately write any muscle words that we have covered.
